Abstract

In practical work, methods of testing are important either in the search for new antibiotics or for clinical sensitivity tests. The former requires testing of different organisms for the production of new antimicrobial agents and testing of natural products for antibiotic activity; the latter entails the testing of organisms isolated from patients for sensitivity to antibiotics used in therapy. In either type of work the choice of the method is conditioned by the biological problem to be investigated; however, as a general feature, for any work of this type it is important to distinguish between bacteristatic and bactericidal action of the antibiotic.
