Abstract
There is no doubt that galaxies exist in a manifold of versions in the colloquial sense of manifold. The accumulated results of research on galaxies allow us, however, to also ascribe the mathematical sense to this term. This implies the existence of some parameters which vary continuously within the observed manifold. It is clear that this demand, as many others, must be translated into an approximation if one applies it to the real and finite body of observations. The main quantitative questions are (in this sequence): what is the true dimension p of the manifold and what are the functional dependencies between the m observed parameters.
