The Edinburgh/Durham Southern Sky Galaxy Survey

Abstract

We are currently completing the Edinburgh/Durham galaxy catalogue of the southern sky using COSMOS measurements of glass copy plates of the IIIa-J Southern Sky survey taken with the U. K. 1.2-m Schmidt Telescope (UKST). We have constructed a mosaic of 60 fields around the SGP (∼ 1500 square degrees) and intend to add a similar number soon to complete the catalogue. Since each COSMOS scan of a UKST plate covers a region of 5.3° × 5.3°, our catalogue will cover ∼ 1 steradian of the southern sky. The Edinburgh/Durham galaxy catalogue is one of the largest and most complete surveys of its kind, containing more than one million galaxies down to a limiting magnitude of b j = 20.
