Abstract
The existence of binary star clusters in the Large Magellanic Cloud has been recently suggested (Hatzidimitriou and Bhatia 1988, Bhatia and Hatzidimitriou 1988 (BH)). A statistical study of close pairs of clusters (centre-to-centre separation of less than 18 pc) in the LMC yielded a significant number of such pairs that cannot be accounted for by projection effects. Photometric observations of some of these clusters showed that clusters belonging to the same pair often have very similar ages (Bhatia et al. 1988 (BCH)). However, the physical association of the pair members still remains to be proved.
