Headache is a common complaint in patients presenting for evaluation. Occipital headache may be caused by a number of underlying pathophysiologic processes, one of which is greateroccipital neuralgia. This condition may be secondary to compressive or presumptively inflammatory pathologies. Available treatments include both medical and surgical therapy. Appropriate evaluation to ascertain the underlying basis for the pain complaint is essential to optimize good outcomes and minimize complications of therapy.
