Abstract
Taller microcosms are relevant to plankton ecosystems. Many are large enough to be called mesocosms. The pond mesocosms covered in Chapter 13 are characteristically broad. The systems considered in this chapter are proportionately deeper, often constructed so as to have dominant plankton zones, and represent deeper waters. The ratio of benthic surface to lateral surface is 1,000 for a pond, 0.25 for a cubic enclosure, and 0.05 for a tall cylinder.
