Growth Factors

  • Chapter

Abstract

Growth factors are proteins that work as paracrine or au-tocrine modulators of cell proliferation. Many growth factors have been isolated that were originally purified on the basis of a specific biological effect and subsequently named for this effect. Once the factor was isolated to homogeneity, the amino acid sequence was determined and recombinant proteins developed. Upon testing of recombinant proteins in a variety of systems it was found that many factors not only have overlapping functions but also act on a wide range of cell types to produce a variety of actions. In addition to the effects of individual factors on cells involved in the wound healing process, many of these factors interact with other substances to antagonize or synergize their effects, perhaps through the use of similar second-messenger systems or modulation of receptor-ligand affinity. The susceptibility of tissues to modulation by growth factors may change as wound healing progresses.
