Abstract
The sequence of mouse epidermal growth factor (EGF) was reported about two decades ago. During the interim, at least three EGF-like peptide growth factors were discovered, as well as a proto-oncogene (neu or HER-2) that has significant homology to the EGF receptor. Research defining the biological functions of the EGF-like peptides has emphasized identifying their mitogenic or transforming potential. This limited perspective may have obscured determining the full spectrum of their biological functions. The fact that one cell contains receptors for different growth factors suggests that cellular homeostasis is controlled by more than one growth factor receptor pathway. Cell behavior may be regulated by a coordination of tissue-specific stimulatory and inhibitory signals mediated locally by growth factors.
