Tools for Technology Assisted Learning: Teaching Problem-Solving Skills with Patient Simulations

Abstract

This chapter discusses the need to teach problem-solving skills to dental students and describes the development, formative evaluation, implementation, and planned summative evaluation of the Dental Diagnosis and Treatment (DDx&Tx) System, a series of patient simulations designed to teach these problem-solving skills. A separate discussion summarizes the role of evaluation in guiding the development process of all instructional technology products, with examples provided from our experiences with the Dental Diagnosis and Treatment (DDx&Tx) System.
