Abstract
The organization now known as Nicotine Anonymous was founded in California in 1983, based on the “Twelve Steps” and other principles and traditions of Alcoholics Anonymous. Originally known as “California Smokers Anonymous” or “Smokers Anonymous,”1 it originated virtually simultaneously in Los Angeles and San Francisco, with one meeting group in each location, each unaware of the other’s existence. As of 1990, Nicotine Anonymous has over 400 weekly meetings in 43 states, as well as dozens more in Canada, Europe, Central and South America, Australia, and elsewhere in the world.2
