Abstract

In this expository article a brief survey is given of a part of the theory of rectilinear shearing flows of simple fluids with fading memory. The topics discussed have relevance to the search for a theory of melt fracture of polymers at high rates of shear. The emphasis is laid on unbounded growth of shear-acceleration waves and breakdown of initially smooth solutions.
