Abstract
The goal of this chapter is to consider some of the consequences of the dynamic interactions due to the transmission of power within the musculoskeletal system and between it and its environment. Power transmission embodies a two-way or bi-causal interaction which may be characterized by mechanical impedance. Some theoretical considerations in modeling and analyzing mechanical impedances will be reviewed. Some properties of the mechanical impedance of the neuro-muscular system and their implications for organizing and executing motor behavior will be surveyed.
