Abstract
Recent epidemiological studies document the continued impact of low back pain (LBP) on our society. LBP occurs at some time in over 60% of the population in industrialized nations (Andersson, 1981; Deyo, 1983), and each year 5% of American adults experience an episode of low back pain (Frymoyer and Cats-Baril, 1987). As many as 75 million Americans currently suffer from back problems (Kelsey et al., 1979; Kelsey and White, 1980), and each year seven million new cases develop. Of these new cases, five million will become partially disabled and the remaining two million will be unable to work at all. The decrease in work time associated with lower-back pain has been estimated to be 93 million work days per year, second only to the common cold (Nordby, 1981). The long-range projections of this problem are even more serious than the above numbers suggest because the rate of disability resulting from LBP increased at 14 times the rate of population growth between 1977 and 1981 (Cats-Baril et al., 1987).
