Acidification Research in the Federal Republic of Germany

Part of the book series: Advances in Environmental Science ((2311,volume 5))

Abstract

Acidification research in the Federal Republic of Germany is integrated into the overall air pollution monitoring and research program and deals with all subjects from emission, transmission, and deposition to environmental effects and abatement strategies as well as control technologies. The Federal Environmental Agency (Umweltbundesamt, UBA) plays an important role in the realization of the Environmental Research Plan (UFOPLAN).

After the onset of serious forest damage a massive research program was initiated around 1983. It is coordinated by the Interministerial Working Group “Forest Damage/Air Pollution” (IMA), combining federal as well as Laender ministries. The program is part of the national “Action Program to Save the Forest” (1985) and covers approximately 660 projects (1982 to 1988) in 15 research areas including laboratory work and field experiments at more than 140 forest sites. The state of science is reviewed by the Scientific Advisory Council (FBW). As in the overall environmental research in the Federal Republic, international cooperation is also an important part of the forest damage research program. In addition to research on health effects, environmental damage to materials, and effects on soils and ecosystems, dispersion and deposition models as well as monitoring and control technologies are investigated, Gene ecological research is expected to supply further guidance for the protection of genetic resources.
