Sacral and Lumbo-Sacral Agenesis

  • Chapter
The Pediatric Spine II

Part of the book series: Principles of Pediatric Neurosurgery ((PRINCPEDIATR))

Abstract

Sacral agenesis is a rare condition consisting of partial or complete absence of the sacrum. With minimum orthopedic interventions, almost all of the patients with sacral agenesis become community walkers, usually without aid. Lumbo-sacral agenesis is a somewhat rarer condition consisting of absence of part or all of the lumbar spine and sacrum, with ilio-lumbar disassociation and instability; “arthogrypotic-like” deformity of the lower limb including hip dislocation, knee contracture, foot deformity; and paraplegia. Orthopedic management of such a patient can include amputation and use of prostheses. Anomalies of the viscera, particularly in the genito-urinary system and in the rectal area, are often seen in these two conditions. Bladder or external sphincter dysfunction with vesico-ureteral reflux are commonly present. Bladder and bowel control are often impaired.
