Abstract
The present study was designed to develop measures of psychologic predisposition to obesity and, separately, to anorexia, and to investigate the personality correlates of these measures. It was formulated so as to circumvent the confounding effects of self-selection factors in clinical samples and random error due to weight fluctuations noted in the introduction to this volume. First, self-selection factors were eliminated by randomly sampling from a large group of university students without consideration of weight characteristics-the assumption being that the sample would provide the expected distribution of normal, overweight, and underweight persons.
