Life Cycle Strategies of an Intertidal Midge Between Subtropic and Arctic Latitudes

The Evolution of Insect Life Cycles

Part of the book series: Proceedings in Life Sciences ((LIFE SCIENCES))

Abstract

In most environments, organisms are confronted with seasonal fluctuations of physical and biotic factors. The amplitude of these fluctuations depends on geographical latitude, local climate, and local characteristics of habitats. Daily and, at the interface between land and sea, tidal fluctuations are superimposed on the seasonal environmental cycles. Consequently, to persist at a given locality, development, time of reproduction, and population dynamics of an animal species must be adapted specifically to the opportunities and disturbances created by these habitat fluctuations.
