Correlates of Empathy to Depressive Phenomena

  • Paul V. Trad

Abstract

The importance of understanding the developmental course of empathy has been recognized only relatively recently, since the publication of Feshbach and Roe’s (1968) paper on empathetic responses in children ages six and seven. At that time the authors noted that little was known about the developmental aspects of empathy, its causes, and its social consequences. Not until Hoffman and others formulated a developmental model was a comprehensive link established between empathy and other affective, social, and cognitive realms.
