Neurosonography: Periventricular Leukomalacia

  • Chapter
Neurosonography of the Pre-Term Neonate

Abstract

There are references to peri ventricular leukomalacia (PVL) in the medical literature datingn as far back as 1843,1 when Little delivered a series of lectures drawing attention to the association of spasmodic contractures and mental retardation with prematurity. Although Virchow2 and Parrot3-5 described the pathology and resultant clinical abnormalities of PVL in remarkable detail, few additional reports of PVL appeared in the literature until Banker and Larroche investigated it in 1962.6 Their classic work did much to elucidate the incidence, predisposing factors, clinical features, and pathology of PVL.
