Abstract
The modern state of experimental-design theory is considered with regard to its mathematical foundations, the multitude of optimality criteria, the need to make compromise decisions when designs are constructed, the theory of factorial designs, the design of screening experiments, designs that take into account the systematic error of the proposed model, and designs for models which are nonlinear with respect to the parameters. Applications of experimental design in the USSR are reviewed. An attempt is made to show that the evolution of ideas and methods of experimental design has made the concept of a good experiment precise enough so that one can contemplate the formulation of a mathematical theory of experiment.
