Abstract
Childbearing and nonchildbearing women were followed intensively until 9 weeks postpartum. At that time all subjects were interviewed to determine whether they had experienced a major or minor depression at any time since delivery. Levels of depressive symptomatology were determined using the BDI and the SCL-90-R depression subscale at 3, 6, and 9 weeks postpartum. Subjects were asked to respond with respect to symptoms during the previous week. The major purpose of this chapter is to describe our findings regarding factors that predicted the occurrence of depression anytime in the first 9 weeks after childbirth and levels of depressive symptomatology at 3, 6, and 9 weeks after delivery.
