Postfire Plant Community Dynamics in the Mediterranean Basin

The Role of Fire in Mediterranean-Type Ecosystems

Part of the book series: Ecological Studies ((ECOLSTUD,volume 107))

Abstract

Fire is such an ancient, universal, and ecological force that it has played an important part in shaping many of the vegetative communities and much of the landscape in the Mediterranean basin. The aridity of the climate has undeniably influenced, but not always preponderantly, the structure and composition of vegetations. Drought, combined with the nutrient poorness of the various soils, and fire contributed to the creation of such communities as matorrales and tomillares in Spain, maquis and garrigues in southern France, macchia in Italy, and xerovuni and phryganas in Greece. These various landscapes have been also modeled by human action, which has had a strong influence in these areas.
