Abstract
Growth hormone releasing hormone (GHRH) and somatostatin (SRIF) are secreted by the hypothalamus. After traversing the hypophyseal portal system, these two peptides will bind to their respective receptors situated on the somatotroph cells. Nevertheless, regulation of pituitary growth hormone (GH) secretion is mediated by several hormonal and central nervous system signals. GH is secreted in a wave-like pulsatile fashion. The pattern of GH secretion is considered in more detail elsewhere in this volume. GHRH and SRIF act out of phase to stimulate or suppress GH secretion, respectively. Peripheral hormones, including steroid and thyroid hormones as well as insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I) and insulin-like growth factor II (IGF-II), also participate in the control of GH secretion.
