Abstract

Growth hormone (GH) secretion occurs in a pulsatile fashion because of its primary regulation by two hypothalamic hormones, growth hormone releasing hormone (GHRH) and somatostatin (SRIF). GHRH stimulates GH synthesis; it increases transcription of growth hormone messenger RNA within minutes by increasing cyclic AMP (1). SRIF is probably more important in determining the timing and amplitude of GH pulses, but has no effect on GH synthesis.
