Polymer-Dispersed Liquid Crystal Films

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: Partially Ordered Systems ((PARTIAL.ORDERED))

Abstract

Polymer films containing microdroplets of liquid crystal (LC) are a recently discovered class of materials with considerable potential for a variety of light control applications [1–10]. These films can be switched from a light-scattering to a transparent state by the application of a modest voltage. This transmittance change is achieved by a field-induced reorientation of the LC molecules which improves the match between the refractive indices of the droplets and the polymer matrix. Electrooptic devices based on these films have many attractive features: they require no polarizers, operate at very low power levels, have rapid response times, are easily fabricated, and can be made in a large, mechanically flexible format. Potential applications of these films include electronic displays, signs, windows for buildings and vehicles, automobile sunroofs, room dividers, light valves, and temperature sensors/indicators.
