The hand is an organ that is directed by the will and is capable of a great variety of complicated movements. These movements are possible because of the highly co-ordinated actions of its intrinsic and extrinsic muscles and its numerous joints. The thumb is all-important to the hand, since the property of apposition depends on it; without this, the functional capacity of the hand is reduced greatly.
