Abstract

In evaluating any surgical procedure designed to treat morbid obesity, the following must be considered: the effectiveness of the operation with respect to the extent and duration of weight loss, the cost in terms of early and late complications, and the net effect these factors have on the patient’s quality of life. Whether longevity will be increased appreciably cannot be determined until actuarial studies have been completed on a significant number of patients. This kind of information is essential in arriving at a valid conclusion as to which surgical approach is best, and more importantly, whether surgery for obesity is a justifiable method of treatment.
