Abstract
In 1963 Payne and DeWind coined the term “morbid” obesity to draw attention to the life-threatening consequences of being 100%, or more than 100 lb, above average body weight.1 Because obesity, particularly of this magnitude, has proved very resistant to medical management, radical surgical treatment seems justified.
