Abstract
The urinary system consists of four organs that function cooperatively in the removal of wastes from the blood and in their elimination from the body (Fig. 15.1). These four organs and their respective functions are:
-
(1)
kidneys: complex filtration and ion-exchange systems to remove wastes, metabolites, excess water and, electrolytes from the blood, producing urine;
-
(2)
ureters: ducts to carry this fluid to temporary storage in the bladder;
-
(3)
bladder: a distensible, muscular storage tank with a neurally controlled emptying mechanism;
-
(4)
urethra: a duct for the delivery of urine to the exterior.
In the male, urethral functions are shared with the reproductive system.
