Abstract

In natural environments animals are exposed to more-or-less regular and predictable periodic events, such as (1) daily changes in intensity of light, (2) the lunar cycle, (3) tides (reflecting the combined gravitational forces of the sun and moon) and (4) seasonal weather changes. Very few, if any, vertebrates escape the influence of these cycles.
