Abstract
From early in this century until World War II, the Carnegie Institution of Washington supported one of the most active programs in tropical marine research of that time. It supported the Tortugas Marine Laboratory at Dry Tortugas, Florida and expeditions to tropical areas around the world. The Carnegie Institution provided many workers their first exposure to the tropical ocean and profoundly influenced some who continued on to make major contributions in tropical oceanography and biology.
