Abstract

A reflex is an invariant motor response, generated by the nervous system, to a specific sensory stimulus. Reflexes are the simplest responses of the nervous system and result from the sequential excitation of sensory, neural, and motor elements. These elements form the reflex arc (Fig. 7.1 A). This is the neural pathway connecting the sensory receptor with the muscles that participate in the reflex response.
