Abstract
This paper describes an application of interactive graphic display terminals to magazine composition. The techniques discussed are being used in a demonstration system designed to evaluate a proposed computer typesetting system. The proposed system uses on-line terminals to prepare, edit, arrange and filmset text for magazine pages. The demonstration system utilises off-line text preparation, editing on an IBM 2250 graphic display and filmsetting on a Harris-Intertype Fototronic-CRT. Only the editing on the graphic display is discussed in detail. The display is used to draw diagrams showing the text layout on the page. The paper describes in detail the drawing techniques, data storage and the algorithm to justify type into areas drawn on the graphic display.
