Abstract
This paper describes a development project intended to evaluate the suitability of using computer graphics for the real time solution of technical problems arising during the normal conduct of business. One of the areas selected for computer graphics development was the area of engineering design and simulation programs, where man-machine interaction can be very fruitful. These programs could incorporate the fast response and visual capabilities of the graphics environment to form more effective decision making tools for the engineer. In particular, the fractionation model was selected for graphics adaptation because of the opportunity for significant savings in capital cost and operating expenses, which should result from improved fractionator design.
The Graphics Oriented Fractionator Analysis and Simulation Tool (GOFAST) is a computer program that combines a multifeed, multidraw fractionation tower program with user oriented graphic panels for immediate input and editing of data, control of program execution, and meaningful output of plots and tabulations. The graphics panels displayed throughout the execution of the program follow a consistent format enabling the user to find information readily. Display messages explain the actions he is allowed to take at the graphics device. Whenever the user performs an action at the console, the program alters the display on the screen to inform the user that his action has been received by the program. Parametric studies of design variables are provided by a case study mechanism. The program will develop upon request a number of cross plots of case results which allow the process engineer to rapidly select the preferred combination of variables.
