Abstract
Water-soluble polymers have found a broad range of application in the production of petroleum. Table I shows the polymer types commonly employed in each application (1,2,3). The presence of an entry indicates that the polymer in question has received some commercially significant utilization in the indicated application. The lack of an entry does not imply that the polymer shows no activity in that application, but rather that to the authors’ knowledge no significant commercialization has been realized. The polymers serve one or more of six functions:

Water-loss control

2.
Viscosity control
-
3.
Flocculation
-
4.
Suspension (dispersion)
-
5.
Turbulent friction reduction
-
6.
Mobility control.
The polymers come from only four families: polyamines, vinyl polymers, modified celluloses, and naturally occurring polysaccharides. Notably absent are members of the condensation polymer family.
