Some Electrochemical Systems of Technological Interest

  • Chapter
Volume 2 Modern Electrochemistry

Abstract

At the outset of this book (cf. Sections 1.3, 1.4, and 1.9) the role of electrochemistry in the development of science and technology and thus in the material standard of civilization was mentioned. To recall two milestones, the whole science of electricity with all its technological consequences was associated with the discovery and development of the first electrochemical energy source by Alessandro Volta (March 20, 1800). The voltaic pile was the first source of large quantities of stable electric current and it enabled studies of the elementary properties of the new form of energy to be made. Secondly, aluminum metal is obtained by electrodeposition from a melt containing a product from the chemical processing of a naturally occurring ore. The consumption of that metal in this present civilization has taken proportions such that it may be considered along with steel in degree of importance in practical metallurgy. Together with plastics, it has extended the path of engineering beyond the iron era.
