Abstract

The J-polypeptide chain of polymeric IgA, secretory IgA and/or IgM has been identified in the human (1,2), dog (3), rabbit (1), mouse (4), pig (5), bovine (6), sheep (7), pheasant, toad, catfish (8), shark (9), chicken, rat, but not in tortoise (10) by means of gel electrophoresis in alkaline urea of the reduced-alkylated or S-sulfonated immunoglobulins. The finding of J-chain in such phylogenetically distant species as catfish and shark, points to the primitive character of this polypeptide (8,9).
