Abstract
Although locomotion patterns in modern apes and man are clearly different, the principles which control the muscular factors are common. Specific muscles provide the motive force when a dynamic movement occurs, but the continuance of that activity during posture rarely is called for. Postural mechanisms exist which allow relaxation of muscles whenever inert mechanisms can bear the load; this state is surprisingly prevalent in both apes and man.
