New Small Proteins Associated with DNA-Dependent RNA Polymerase of Escherichia coli After Infection with T4 Phage

  • Chapter
Control of Transcription

Part of the book series: Basic Life Sciences ((BLSC,volume 3))

Abstract

T4 phage infection of Escherichia coli involves several changes in the transcription process that are very interesting with respect to control mechanisms. Almost coincident with infection, transcription of E. coli DNA ceases (1–4) and formation of early species of T4 messenger RNA (mRNA) begins. Shortly after T4 DNA replication starts (6–7 min after infection), a second part of the T4 DNA molecule is transcribed, producing late T4 mRNA. The early-to-late change has been studied in some detail by several investigators (5–8). Late T4 mRNA synthesis is dependent on DNA replication (9–11) or a DNA structure prepared for replication (12). This change from early to late transcription also involves a switchover in transcription from the I to the r strand of the T4 DNA (13).
