Abstract
Modern recording instruments frequently have sensitive preamplifiers built into their circuitry or available as optional plug-in equipment. Sensitivities of 0.5 mV/inch are common and sensitivities as high as 1 μV/inch are available. The use of sophisticated electronic amplifiers in recorders greatly increases their capability but at the same time requires increased sophistication on the part of the user to deal with the problem of electrical noise.
