Prostate Localization Using Ultrasound B-Mode Scanning

  • Chapter
Ultrasound in Medicine

Abstract

The ability to deliver radiation therapy precisely has made accurate localization of the prostate essential for radiation therapy treatment planning. There have been many approaches to this problem, but the most popular is to catheterize the patient, place barium in his rectum, and take A-P and lateral radiographs of the pelvis with centimeter markers from which measurements are taken (Fig. 1). The centimeter marker is placed between the patient’s legs and sits perpendicular to the table on a plastic platform.
