Oscillations of the Interventricular Septum in Aortic Insufficiency
The regurgitant stream in aortic insufficiency (A1) may strike the interventricular septum or anterior mitral valve leaflet. The purpose of this study was to determine whether or not rarpid oscillations of the septum analogous to those of the mitral valve could be seen echocardiographically in oatients with A1. 29 patients with A1 were studied. 14 of the 29 had abnormal early diastolic oscillations of the septum, usually near the aortic root. This finding was equivocal in 3 additional cases. 22 of the 29 patients had mitral oscillations, but in onlv 6 cases was this motion present in both mitral valve and septum. It is concluded that the presence of septal high frequency oscillations early in diastole is helpful in the echocardiographic diagnosis of A1.
