Abstract
The second annual workshop on the testis was intended to discuss the most recent information on steroid production and metabolism in the seminiferous tubules and on the hormonal regulation of seminiferous tubular function. In this short summary, I have arbitrarily selected several aspects that have emerged from the discussions and which concern:
-
some analytical/technical aspects
-
the production of steroids by various cell types of the testis
-
factors influencing testicular steroid production
-
established characteristics of Sertoli cells
-
steroids and the regulation of spermatogenesis
The main guideline for this selection has been a conviction that correct answers to questions regarding biological problems cannot be established without detailed information regarding the significance of experimental results, particularly when different technical approaches tend to result in seemingly conflicting information.
