Abstract
Since the electroencephalogram has become widely used in studies of the effects of drugs on the central nervous system, a method has been sought to allow the recognition of drugs based on the EEG patterns produced by each drug (Fink et al. 1968, Killam and Gehrmann 1972). A promising technique derived from the period-analytic methodology of Burch (Burch, Greiner, and Correll 1955; Burch 1959; Burch et al. 1964) is being developed in our laboratory. It is proving useful in distinguishing among drugs that produce similar behavioral effects. The discrimination is based on the pattern of changes in the three period-analytic descriptors of the EEG, the major, intermediate, and minor periods. The pattern of changes for one drug can be compared with those for other drugs in evaluating similarities and differences among compounds.
