Slip Systems in Stoichiometric MgAl2O4 Spinel

The mechanical properties of stoichiometric MgAl2O3 spinel single crystals have been investigated at high temperatures (∿1800°C). The slip system has been determined by slip trace analysis and electron microscopy to be {111} <110>. This behavior is rationalized by analyzing the changes in atomic configuration around dissociated dislocations as they move through the lattice. The change to {110} slip planes in non-stoichiometric aluminarich spinel is explained in terms of the influence of cation vacancies on the dislocation structure and movement.
