Abstract

The effects of Corynebacterium parvum suspension on the immune response of mice to tetanus toxoid were examined using toxin challenges and passive hemagglutination. The responses measured by toxin challenge were reduced as a result of the administration of C. parvum under all the circumstances investigated.

The effects of C. parvum on the antibody response, as measured by passive hemagglutination, were more varied. When given with, or before, a single dose of toxoid, C. parvum caused a slight increase in the response seen at 7 days and a slight decrease in the response seen at 21 days after the administration of the toxoid.

When given with, or before, the first of two doses of toxoid, C. parvum reduced the titer measurable 14 days after the second dose, but increased the titer if given with, or before, the second dose of toxoid. The treatment of hemagglutination assays with 2-mercaptoethanol did not materially alter the pattern of effects produced by C. parvum.
