Abstract
It was stated in the introduction to the section on mediated diffusion that the role of plasma membranes in the transport of substances into and out of cells is incontestable and that intracellular adsorption cannot explain a number of phenomena of kinetic nature. It definitely has no justification in the case of transport of organic substances by single cells, since these cells (like erythrocytes and some bacteria) can be completely “emptied” and closed again and the remaining plasma membranes still effect a practically unimpaired transport into the cell.
