Abstract

There are two important factors which must be considered before the impact of any pesticidal material on various ecosystems can be critically discussed. These are (1) the current levels of contamination in the ecosystems and (2) the susceptibility of biological material to the pesticides. The contamination factor should be considered in relation to the dynamics of pesticide movement (e.g., accumulation through the food chain). The susceptibility data should eventually include such subtle effects as changes in egg shell thickness and courting and nesting behavior, irritability, and chronic effects to be complete. One of the most important parameters for assessing the sublethal effects of pesticides appears to be to what degree they affect the reproductive processes.
