Neural and Hormonal Determinants of Mating Behavior in Adult Male Rats. A Review

  • Chapter
Limbic and Autonomic Nervous Systems Research

Abstract

During the last 40 years evidence has accumulated that mating behavior results from interactions of steroid sex hormones with neural tissues. In order to study brain mechanisms of mating responses, one wants to describe carefully the elements of the behavior to be accounted for, to know the chemical nature of the inducing hormones, to know where these hormones act in the brain, and finally to study participation in the control of the behavior by pathways to and from hormone-sensitive neural regions. Analyses of these sorts have been applied to a comprehensive study of the neural control over the lordosis reflex of female rodents, during the past few years in our laboratory (Pfaff et al., 1973; Pfaff et al., 1974).
