Abstract
Liquid scintillation counting is of relatively recent origin and has been widely used in various fields of research. The flexibility, versatility, and sensitivity of liquid scintillators allow their use in large volume as well as in small volume detectors. This type of counting technique is exploited not only in the field of nuclear physics, archaeology, biology, chemistry, engineering, and other branches of natural science, but also in the domain of medicine and medical research where its application has widened the scope of studies by rendering the counting of bulky samples possible and the use of weak β-emitting radionuclides as tracers more practical. In fact, liquid scintillation spectrometers have superseded Geiger-Mueller counters in a vast number of laboratories where measurements of radionuclides are routinely conducted.
